Guidebook: Carisbrooke Castle

Lying at the heart of the Isle of Wight, Carisbrooke Castle has always been the most important stronghold on the island. The main walls and keep have been here since 1100, although the castle was updated over the centuries - under Queen Elizabeth I it was one of the few to be wholly refortified with vast artillery defences. But the castle was not just for defence; the surviving buildings reveal that it was a magnificent residence, as befitted the lords and governors of the Isle of Wight.
