Guidebook: Sherborne Old Castle

Sherborne Old Castle was built in the early 12thh century by Roger de Caen, Bishop of Salisbury. By 1335 it had been seized by the Crown. In 1592 the castle passed to Sir Walter Raleigh, who built Sherborne Lodge in the grounds. The buildings were abandoned after the Civil War but a gatehouse, some graceful arcading and decorative windows survive.
