Guidebook: Roche Abbey

From its foundation in 1147 until the Dissolution in 1538 Roche Abbey housed a religious community whose lives were passed in an ordered daily sequence of religious services, reading and manual work. Although much ruined, the remains at Roche rank in importance with the finest early Gothic architecture in the north and they give a full picture of how the monastery was planned and the way in which the community lived and worked.
