Guidebook: Berwick Barracks and Fortifications

Berwick-Upon-Tweed is one of the most outstanding fortified towns in Europe. Occupying a strategic position on the border between England and Scotland, Berwick was fought over for 330 years. The Elizabethan ramparts were begun in 1558, and they were the most sophisticated of the time. For several hundred years, soldiers were billeted in the town, until the early 18th century, when barracks were built. This guidebook sheds new light on the lives of the soldiers garrisoned at Berwick.
