Guidebook: Down House

This unique book is a biography both of Charles Darwin and of Down House, his home for 40 years. It was here that Darwin formulated his famous theory of evolution and wrote most of his major works including On the Origin of Species. The ground floor rooms of the house - the drawing room, dining room, billiard room and Darwin's study - are recreated to look much as they would have done when Darwin and his family lived here. Much of the original furniture can still be seen as well as numerous items from the huge collection of Darwin's books, letters, notebooks, equipment and personal possessions.
