The cylindrical great tower of Conisbrough Castle still dominates the surrounding landscape. It was built in about 1180 by Hamelin de Warenne, earl of Surrey and half-brother to King Henry II, on the site of an earlier Norman castle. In the later Middle Ages Conisbrough fell into royal possession but in 1538 it was largely ruinous. When Sir Walter Scott used it as a setting for his novel Ivanhoe, in the 19th century, Conisbrough found world-wide fame.
