Never Was So much Owed by So Many to So Few (1940) IWM PST 014972 This poster quotes Winston Churchills famous speech to the House of Commons of 20 August 1940. In it he paid tribute to the airmen of the Royal Air Force who were turning the tide of the world war in the Battle of Britain. The airmen featured are often thought to be RAF fighter pilots, but they are actually a bomber crew.

Back Them Up (1942) IWM PST 4085 This is one of a series of Ministry of Information posters bearing the same legend. The series purpose was to boost morale and support for the war effort. Sometimes the images employed depicted actual events, but in this instance the poster celebrates Britains fast, versatile attack aircraft, the De Havilland Mosquito. The poster shows Mosquitos in a daring daylight raid over Berlin.

Let Us Go Forward Together (1940) IWM PST 14835 This posters legend quotes the conclusion to Churchills famous Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat speech of 13 May 1940, his first to the House of Commons after being appointed Prime Minister. This poster asks the people of Britain to commit themselves to a common cause.

The Attack Begins in the Factory (1943) IWM PST 14358 This appeal for increased productivity in Britains war factories makes an explicit link between production and battlefield performance. The image shows Lancaster heavies of RAF Bomber Command in action over industrial plant in Germany.

Back Them Up (1940) IWM PST 3659 Another in the series of Back them up posters. This example pictures a coastal battery on the south of England, with an iconic white cliff visible in the background. The implied German invasion force remains unseen. The artist, Terence, Cuneo was commissioned by the Ministry of Information in 1940, but subsequently became better known as a painter of railway subjects.

Combined Operations Include You (c.1941-2) IWM PST 14076 This is another appeal for increased productivity in Britains was factories, this time issued by the Admiralty. Before the war, the artist, Harold Pym, had produced illustrations for newspapers and weekly periodicals, as well as advertising material for the Ford Motor Company.

Back Them up (1940) IWM PST 6012 Another poster with reassuring message, this time with a comforting image of British naval dominance.

Back up the Fighting Forces (c.1939-40) IWM PST 9236 This poster, produced early war, exhorts the public to support Britains armed forces by picturing members of the three services.
