Whitby Jet and Abbey Silhouette Brooch

A deep black, highly polished gem, derived from fossil wood. Jet was valued as a protector against disease and evil spirits in Roman times.

It was especially popular for ecclesiastical and mourning jewellery, being favoured by Queen Victoria herself.

Hand-made highly polished oval Whitby Jet brooch, the brooch has got Whitby abbey silhouetted over the Jet which is made of silver and the Jet is then edged with silver.. The pin on the back fastens with a revolving catch.
