This volume in the English Heritage series of Research Transactions looks in detail at the dendrochronology project carried out on the roof timbers of Lincoln Cathedral. Almost 600 timbers were sampled, making this the most sampled building in the country and permitting a good sequence of oak fallings from the early 12th century to early modern repairs of the 18th century. The principles and practice of dendrochronology are addressed with reference to many other complex historic buildings. Tree-ring dates, and associated evidence, was used to date the construction and repairs to nine roofs in the cathedral and, overall, enabled better future strategies of repair and maintenance to be devised.
