Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury was one of the most remarkable personalities of Elizabethan England. Born the daughter of an obscure and impoverished Derbyshire squire, her advantageous marriages to four prosperous but short-lived husbands took her to the Royal Court and made her one of the richest women in England: jailer to Mary Queen of Scots and grandmother of Arbella Stuart, one of the claimants to the throne of Elizabeth I.

Very much an early prototype for the successful businesswomen of today, Bess of Hardwick, as she came to be known, was formidable and talented. She ran vast estates with shrewd business acumen and even fought her way through the labyrinthine Elizabethan legal system where women were practically non-existent. She built two great houses that survive today (Chatsworth House and Hardwick Hall) and fulfilled a lifetime ambition of founding a great dynasty. David N. Durant develops her story further and traces how, by the end of the nineteenth century, her blood was flowing in the veins of most English aristocrats, including the Royal Family, in one of the most extraordinary rags-to-riches tales that history has to offer.
