Built in the 12th century by a Bishop of Durham, the huge bulk of Norham Castle commands a strong, defensive position above the River Tweed. After withstanding repeated attacks during the 13th and 14th centuries, the castle gained a reputation for being indestructible. However, in 1513, James IV stormed Norham and succeeded in largely destroying it.
